Do you feel lucky?

I suppose that having spent millions on new bus/rail station and a new shopping centre there was simply no money left to design a safe connection between the two. So everyday thousands must wait for the green man before making it safely from one side to the other. Of course, people being what they are, some decide to cross on the red man and play a Hull version of Russian roulette with the buses with predictable consequences.

From Park Street bridge

The park that Park Street once led to is long gone or possibly never existed; it's just a dreary cut-through from Anlaby Road to Spring Bank but it does have a bridge that rises up and over the rail tracks giving this view of Paragon station. 

Taxi rank

These are licensed cabs at Paragon Station or, should I say, Hull Interchange. You can hail one in the street for a ride that's if you can find one because they tend to queue up at this rank or the one across the road. Because they charge not only for distance travelled but also time taken these are much, much more expensive than hire cars which you can ring up for or go to a firm's offices which are dotted about town. If there's three or more of you I'd recommend getting a hire car it'll be cheaper than the bus.

Means of escape

The near train will take you to Bridlington; the far train goes to London, the others to all points in between.

Hull Interchange

If you arrive in Hull by coach this is where you will debus. This is a much fancier place than the old windswept car park that coaches used to arrive at and I suppose it does give a better first impression. This shot shows how the new bus station has taken over part of the rail station; if you go through the station you end up here.

Paragon Station

Years ago some soulless  bureaucrat came upon the name 'Hull Paragon'  and dropped the 'Paragon'. Now timetables refer only to Hull and life is a little duller for that I feel.

Time to go home

This is the newish Hull Interchange or combined bus and rail station. Straight ahead for buses to all parts of Hull and hereabouts. Trains are to the left from Paragon Station.

Picture Houses

This view has two of Hull's old cinemas. The Tower which I showed you a few days ago and the Regent which was built in 1910 and was open until 1978. The Regent is now a pub called Horners.
The archway is a side entrance to Paragon station. After taking this picture I noticed lots of signs threatening prosecution for trespassing on railway property so I left. 

Hull First

Railway enthusiasts (aka train spotters) will no doubt be able to tell that this is a Class 180 Adelante unit, used by First Hull Trains to run its direct Hull to London service. Here it stands at Paragon station waiting its passengers who have grown weary of the delights of this fair city.

The wrong side of the tracks

Anlaby Road tower blocks seem to march off into the distance. 

These rail platforms are no longer used. They were specially built to take European emigrants from Hull to Liverpool whist separating them from the native population; they were kept out of sight. Many thousands passed through here in the search for a better life. I guess that, as they didn't stay in Hull, the chances are they found one. If they'd stayed their descendants might be living in these lovely "homes".
