“Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.”
Susan Brownell Anthony

Yes, freedom for women is a very good thing!
ReplyDeleteOnly one aspect of freedom, though. Look at them Straight-jacketed into a uniform! Dark top. Blue jeans. Long hair. Sure, one is swept up.
ReplyDeleteUntrammeled, my foot.

DeleteI guess in the 1800s a bike would have been very freeing for women! I'd never thought about that until I saw your Susan B. Anthony quote. ;)
ReplyDeleteI like the modern style of the bridge.
ReplyDeletebicycling has has always meant freedom to me ... but never specifically thought of it as emancipating for women
ReplyDeleteI want a bike but my husband won't let me have one...
ReplyDeleteThe quote is inspiring! I'm going to hop on my bike and go for a ride.
