Omne solum forti patria ...

Omne solum forti patria est ut piscibus aequor,
ut volucri vacuo quicquid in orbe patet

Hull being the cultured place that it is it should come as no surprise to find Ovid quoted on the corner of Hessle Road and the Boulevard.

  1. No surprise at all. I like the carved signs one sees in England. Much nicer than reflective paint.

  2. " Omne Solum " is a Republican motto - the last surviving regicide and still a Republican leader in the 1660-1670s Edmund Ludlow died in exile and his tomb there is a place of pilgrimage for Republicans in England - he is buried in Vevey where over the door to his house he placed " Omni Solum Forti Patria Quia Patri " - his cryptically altered quotation of Ovid's poem.
